Summer has not passed…but winter is arriving soon
So fingers crossed that summer has not run away on us completely…however in the mean time we couldn’t resist showing you a few of the up and coming knitwear pieces which will help us stay warm, cozy and may I say super stylish this winter…
Ionna Kourbela, (the same designer of our sleeves, if you have been following our blog for a while) is an Athens born knitwear designer with a love of finding and using organic, raw materials and unique textures. She is fascinated by the natural elements such as water and wind and focuses on creating garments with as few seams as possible, causing them to move with the wearers own body. Movement created by and around the body are prevalent within many of Kourbela’s collections.
It’s the most simple garments which are in fact the hardest to make successfully. Though the extensive drape of these pictures may not appear simple, they are clean lined, easy to wear and we know you will not be disappointed with the handle of these luxurious yarns against the body either. The problem will be that you will never want to take these special pieces off!
What ever the design concepts and signature style may be, if Kourbela’s new knitwear sell out as fast as her cocooning sleeved cardigan, it may be worth keeping an eye on the blog as we will let you know when these unique creations will be in store.
or put your name down instore to ensure you do miss out on this very clever collection,

Yayoi Kusama; a rather dotty approach!
Now if you have had no good reason to make a special trip to visit Wellington, I’d say that the exhibition at City Gallery by Japanese Avant-Garde painter, novelist and sculptor Yayoi Kusama is reason enough!
Without giving too much away about the surprising exhibition here are a few snaps of her previous works. Imagine what this exhibition may have in store for you…
There are a few words to think about and consider before you plan this trip:
Circles, spots, dots, balls, whatever you want to refer to them as, Yayoi Kusama has thought about it, considered it and taken these shapes to an entirely different level. With an extensive range of media it is clear that she has dedicated a lifetime to the art of dots.
Since drawing her first circle at age ten I do not think Kusama once stopped…3d, 2d, sculptures, rooms, mirrors, print, paint and film are all waiting for your viewing at City gallery as we speak!
If you do decide to make the trip, do pop in and visit Monique and the girls at taylor boutique Wellington store!! We’d love to chat about the exhibition and the events following the mystery rose!
Taylor Nostalgia
So far we are back to business as normal, as we pick up all our weekly routines…
At taylor we have been overcome with nostalgia and thought we’d share our reminiscent list of our highlights of year 2009!
-
Opening of the new laboratory inspired taylor Wellington. After 10 years of dressing Auckland, we have now expanded to the land of Wellington. We love the lofty heights and the elegance of our beautiful and most spacious taylor store in the Old Bank Building.
We had a bit of party to celebrate the milestone and would like to thank all who attended and hope they had as great a time as we did. Here are a few snaps:
This is coverage of our stores interior in the latest issue of Urbis Magazine:
-
We had a fabulous article in Urbis issue 52 about 100% New Zealand Design and Manufactured labels where we allowed our very busy workroom to be photographed!
-
Teed Street Xmas party bash- if you were not part of it last year it may be worth pencilling it in for this one. This wonderful party had lucky taylor customers receiving great Christmas gifts like Porsche cars to drive and gorgeous gala designer handbags.
-
Our mention in the amazing Karen magazine about our current Summer 2009 collection. This magazine is one of our faves. With photographic genius, inspirational styling and unique composition and layout, every issue is worth a peek.
Within this collection we particularly LOVED the return of the crisp white shirt, so fresh, sophisticated and classic. A definite must have at the moment.
-
Participating in the Air New Zealand Uniform contract process. Yes we wish them all the best and all of us are left to wonder what could have been. It was a gruelling process with our final presentation starting at 11.30 and finishing at 5pm…. it has only made us a stronger design team, more adaptable and ready to conquer new challenges…
-
Our fabulous European fabric buying trip in September where we sourced some amazing fabrics and discovered a new shoe designer and a knitwear label. We have just had 4 pallets of amazing Italian fabric arrive into our workroom, so keep a close eye out for the collection ahead…..it may be the best yet.
Our new assistant designer is already making headlines!
Two relevant words within this article are:
ANA VEMIC
Our new assistant designer at taylor boutique.
Serbian born Vemic has wowed the designer direction team with her final year AUT collection “lost but not lonely”. They just had to interview her and learn more about her roots, ideas, plans and more…
Check it out: http://designerdirection.wordpress.com/2010/01/11/designer-spotlight-ana-vemic/
We are very excited to have her on board in the design room with us. And I’m sure you are excited about the clever things that will be turning up in store soon…
5 things to know about Ana:
- Her favourite designers are Nom D and Rei Kawakubo (and taylor)
- During her summer break when she should have had her jandals out in the sun and sand she set-up a workroom in her flat. Now that is a dedication to fashion!
- Ana was born in Serbia
- She admires New Zealand designers and the fact that they are individuals and not solely trend driven.
- AUT was the university Ana completed her BA in Fashion Design.
Introducing Wellington’s new store Manager…
With every new and fabulous store, a new and even more amazing manager follows. So lets learn more about Monique; the force holding taylor Wellington upright throughout the gale force winds!
Firstly….the store and the creativity and artistry which goes on within it.

1. What are your 3 favourite pieces from this season and why?
My fave three pieces this season are the Array Wrap, because it’s so versatile, it can go with everything, it’s like having 10 pieces in one.
The Contrary Dress, this is my “I have nothing to wear” dress, throw it on and go, it is so easy.
And lastly the Standard Issue Cropped Cardigan, it’s a great cotton chunky knit and can be thrown over most outfits adding that extra layer.
2. What appeals to you most about taylor boutique? What made you decide you wanted to join our tight knit team?
The most appealing aspect about taylor is the fact that it is a New Zealand company with the range made and designed within New Zealand. I wanted to join the taylor team because I thought it had a great signature style and look, a great atmosphere and employers who were passionate about fashion and New Zealand design.
3. What will you be doing this Summer, if it ever arrives in Wellington?
Summer has arrived! Apart from working, I will be soaking up the sun at Oriental Bay, enjoying a few afternoon wines with friends at Wellington’s great bars and maybe catching a few live concerts at the Botanical Gardens, which they have every year.
4. Do you think that Wellington women are pleased that taylor boutique have finally moved to Wellington?
Wellington women are happy to see taylor here. It’s style with a twist, Wellingtonians appreciate an artistic approach to things. We have versatile styles that are interesting, original and most importantly make our customers look and feel fabulous.
5. What would be your ideal day?
If it was a work day, lots of ladies enjoying taylor fashion and having fun with our styles- leaving the store feeling great.
A non working day would be enjoying a leisurely lunch with friends, relaxing and seeing what the day brings. And I have been known to enjoy the odd spot of shoe shopping as well.
Okay this question does not have a number as it is strictly off the record. I hear there has been talk of a secret rose delivery into store from an admirer. Do you care to expand on the topic at all?
As for the off the record question. I do not know who your sources are, but someone must be starting rumors. Ha!
Rumor?? I snapped a picture in store………..you be the judge!
Now that we all know Monique a little bit better, when in the area feel free to pop in store and have a chat with our talented new store manager- I’m sure you’ll love her as much as we do.
