With the Wellington Cup only a week and a half away we thought we would give you some tips and tricks on how to look your best.

If you don’t know where to start with your Race Day wear it can be very hard to achieve. The easiest thing to remember is: -If you can wear it as a guest to a wedding, you can wear it to the Races! Take these outfits for example, easy to put together and perfect for either occasion.

Make a bold, slightly contemporary statement this year with our Silk Tucked Oblique Tunic worn over our tight legged Integral Pants. This gives a fun, fresh twist that is perfect teamed with a feathered Fascinator. And always remember to accessorize, they should complement and never contradict.
Wellington weather can be four season’s in one day so it is a good idea to have a stylish overcoat on-hand like our Generale Trench- You will never be out of place with this one.

(Above Right:) The weight of the beautiful white cotton, Liberty Maxi Dress is ideal for the day. Add some colour by tying a scarf or ribbon around the waist. Voila!

If your a lady who loves the classic Black vs White why not add sum texture to your outfit with stripes and sheers to get that gorgeous depth. Our Migrate Tunic with a Striped Taylor Slip creates a feminine feel while leaving room for you to show-off your stylish heels at the end of your pins. Shown: Solution Boot and Kohl & Cochineal Lattice Wallet.

Tip- Race Day Wear is Top-to-Toe Dressing so don’t forget nail polish, hat/fascinator, tan/stockings and accessories. No your everyday handbag won’t do, you need a small elegant bag or clutch.

And they’re off! Happy shopping

It has all come around too quickly, and I find I am near the end of a wonderful 2 years at Taylor Boutique in Wellington. This will be my last post on behalf of the Wellington team… but not to worry, the lovely Gabrielle will be keeping you up to date with all things new over the next few months.

So, what better to do for a final post than a little Top 10… favourite tips, outfits, current styles and snippets from my time here. A big thank you to all my colleagues and Vicki and Mark, for being such a fabulous bunch to work with… and to all my lovely customers, it has been a pleasure and keep up those gorgeous taylor wardrobes!

the classic taylor outfit

It is as easy as one, two, three… skinny pants, a long shirt or silk layer, and a blazer or soft jacket. It is layering at it’s most basic, and it looks fabulous on everyone. There are many variations in taylor pants, tops and jackets… the idea is to get the perfect combination for you. It may take a bit of trying on, but you will get a great go-to outfit for your troubles.

 get it tailored to fit

Every single body shape is different, so you are super lucky if you get those black pants or jacket to fit you perfectly off the rack. Remember we can alter the bits that aren’t quite right to suit your shape. A little waist tuck on pants or nipping in the sides of a jacket can make all the difference, and is something our taylor girls are trained in.

the pod dress

This has been a favourite of mine for a long time, I think it shows off taylor’s style and uniqueness beautifully. It is a bit different, and something that if you haven’t tried… you need to. And Wellington ladies, I have just received the plain white in store, which is super easy for summer.

Pod Dress

get both colours

Because those wardrobe favourites are sometimes hard to find. I wish I had doubles of some of my trusty taylor silk numbers from when I first started… I still wear them even with all the new product coming through. If you find something you love, why not get the black and the other colour… investment buying! And let’s face it, one pair of Integral Pants is not enough…

i wish i had

The Embrace Bangle and Obsidian Ring… they stare at me from the counter each day, and I would take them home, except I only ever received one of each, so want one of our lovely customers to have them. They are both gorgeous.

push your comfort zone

Sometimes we need a to push ourselves to try something we normally wouldn’t. It may not work… but you might just end up with something unexpected that looks fabulous on you. Take the Liberty Maxi Dress, below… many of our ladies have tried it on just for fun, and it has looked stunning on all different shapes and sizes. So, next time your in, try those pants you have been eyeing up but just aren’t sure of the shape, try the emerald green even though you have never worn it, try the dress even though it looks a little strange on the hanger… you never know until you try. Do not be afraid to stand out, or look a little different from everyone else, it can be a good thing.

black on black

It is a favourite combo at taylor, and for good reason as it works so well. Keep your black outfits interesting with lots of texture. Combine meshes and silks with wool suiting, and soft with structured… all black is not for everyone, but when done well it can look stunning.

well-cut pants

One of the things that taylor does best is pants. It has been nice to see everyone embrace the new, more relaxed pant shapes. At the moment my favourites are the Garner Pant and the Graduate Pant (sold Garner Pants in the middle of typing this). Both are slightly cropped styles for summer and can be worn with your flat brogues or a pair of great heels. Our red silk Graduate Pant has been a hot seller in Wellington, and has suited many different ages and sizes… honestly!

kohl & cochineal

We love our accessories label Kohl & Cochineal, designed and made straight out of Nelson using all New Zealand leather. Luxuriously soft, elegant and simple designs… I wish I had more… and Wellington, we have just received an Obsidian Bag, below, in store. Beautiful.

individuality

I like to wear all black, I feel comfortable and confident in it, I always wear a chunky ring on my right hand, I like to wear black pants and a white tee with heels on a night out, especially if everyone else is wearing a dress, and I like having short hair. Our designer Vicki is never without a taylor blazer, and likes to wear heels, always. One of our fabulous customers is known for her love of colour, and always likes to have a bit of brightness in her outfit, even in the sea of black that is winter. Taylor may provide the pieces you wear, but it is how you put it together that makes it uniquely you. All those little individual signatures and twists are what I love about fashion.

We know a lot of you have been waiting for some fresh new pieces.

This Saturday in all stores we are releasing some gorgeous new styles, including the Reconcile Dress. We have got some fabulous colours in each style, see below for more details… and be in quick!

RECONCILE DRESS…

COLOURS: left to right.. mineral, persimmon, vapour, also available in black.

This is what many of you have been waiting for! Gorgeous silk, two tones and a clever piece that you can wear your way. Knot and tie, twist and wrap… this piece is going to be lots of fun for all. Perfect with your Integral Pants, or bring it out on its own when the summer sun starts shining.

STRATUS DRESS…

COLOURS: persimmon and black.

Wow! This is an absolute stunner. For all you ladies looking for that special dress, this is it. The Stratus has a draped hemline which is flattering from all angles. Soft, feminine and a little bit different, it is perfect for summer weddings and cocktail parties. Keep in mind our lovely model has extra long legs, so if you are worried about the length, don’t be. Very limited numbers available.

SEGMENT DRESS…

COLOURS: left to right.. mineral, persimmon, white, emerald.

The new Segment Dress is an easy style to wear dressed up or down. With a keyhole neck, and short sleeve to provide a bit of coverage the Segment can easily be paired with flats, a belt and jacket for a more casual day. Or try it with your favourite heels, some stunning jewellery and a clutch for a night out. Play with knotting the silk, like on the emerald picture, just to change it up a bit. All colour tastes are covered… our favourite is the white, we can see it being worn a bright summer day simply teamed with a pair of flat sandals. Gorgeous.

See you in store Saturday…

It seems as though it is that time of year again. Everyone is on the hunt for that special outfit for a cocktail party, black tie or of course, a summer wedding. Here are a few ideas, some classic, some with a bit of a twist… all will look fantastic and make you feel fabulous. The most important tip is to wear your outfit with confidence… and push yourself to try on something you may never have thought to, it may not work, but it may be perfect!

CLASSIC CUTS

PICTURED: Cascade Dress in vintage with Convene Jacket in black, Cascade Dress in emerald.

For those of you who are after a simple and elegant style, the Cascade Dress is a must try. Giving a fitted silhouette, the Cascade has layers of fabric to flatter the figure without adding bulk. A great length, not too short or too long, this can be worn with our lovely Convene Jacket for a bit of coverage. Perfect for an afternoon wedding or an evening event, add your heels and a clutch bag and you’re ready to go. Both the Cascade Dress and Convene Jacket are available in a variety of different colourways.

THE TUX

PICTURED: Detach Shirt Jacket in white, Garner Pant in black, Alias Jacket in black.

Why not try something a little unexpected? This combo draws inspiration from a man-style tuxedo, but we guarantee it will look gorgeous on. Our Garner Pants are a fantastic relaxed style with a classic front pleat and cropped ankle. The Detach Shirt is an absolute stunner, and wearing the white version with the black suit makes a real statement. Our Alias Jacket is back in store after selling out first time around. Clever draping at the front adds detail, but it still creates a great nipped in waist. To top off this look add a pair of NUNC Solution Boots, wow!

LIGHT AND BRIGHT

PICTURED: Gradient Wrap in persimmon with Integral Pants in vapour.

The Gradient Wrap is a great piece to add a little brightness to your outfit. We promise this looks much better in person than in our photo! Being a wrap, your can wear it your way… whatever suits you best. We have just discovered a nifty little way to make it into a great v-neck wrap dress. The tonal persimmon silk is just divine and will look great for special occasions. Add our vapour Integral Pants if you want to keep it light, or the black if you prefer, and finish with a great heel to get that all important extra height.

SILK COMBINATIONS

PICTURED: Graduate Pant in persimmon, Hub Shirt Jacket in graphite with Mesh Camber in black underneath.

We love the silk Hub Jacket as it is great to dress up, and it has a sleeve… so no extra jacket for coverage required. This can be buttoned into a cowl neck, or left as a straight button down. Use the silk tie like a sash to cinch in the waist, and you have a beautiful, soft, kimono-like shape. We have teamed this with our silk Graduate Pant in persimmon red – the grey/red combination is perfect for getting away from black and makes the outfit softer. The pant is a fantastic cut, and is one of those pieces you have to try on to see how well it works. For a bit of texture add a mesh camber underneath. Yes, add those heels again… we see this combo as the new alternative to the trusty cocktail dress!

SIMPLE STYLE

PICTURED: Stingray Top in gradient, Network Skirt in black, O Belt in black.

We have just received our new Stingray Tops and are loving their simplicity. A soft silk, with a short front and tailed back this piece is easy but striking. There is something so stylish about a black and white outfit, and this gradient silk is a great way to get the look. Try it with our Network Skirt for an easy 2 piece combination. This combo would be great for all those work events that seem to crop up from now until Christmas time. Add the O Belt if you want a bit more shape, or try with a great black pant, like the Cuffed Liman.

After the success with our accessories and finishing touches post a couple of weeks ago, we thought we would bring you another chapter of outfit inspiration – this time it’s how to do casual. It is a common scenario that we find ourselves in… how to dress for the weekend, casual Friday, what to wear to Saturday morning sport, a lazy Sunday brunch, or the current dilemma for a lot of women –  what outfit to wear to the rugby and aftermatch celebrations!

Sometimes it can be a little hard to pull together a casual outfit that has the right mix of ease and style… we want comfort, we want a bit of polish, a bit of edge or difference, and we want to look like it was an effortless choice of outfit… here are some solutions, using our Taylor Summer Collection…

THE CLASSIC WHITE TEE & JEANS

Generale Trench in black, Cayenne Jean in dark, Half Sleeve Tee in black (under), Transform Tee in white, ARTIKEL Knot Necklace in black.

This is a timeless combination, the white tee and jeans. We still have a few pairs of our Red Engine Cayenne Jean left, which is a straight leg style, slim but not too skinny. They are most definitely one of the best pairs of jeans I have ever owned, super soft denim, smart enough to wear out at night and great for your days off running around town. Keep the look fresh with a couple of layered tees, the white Transform Tee has a great long line and draped detail that just adds that little bit of extra interest. If you need a jacket (say if you have been dragged out to the rugby) add our Generale Trench, a great weight for the spring/summer months and something that will be in your wardrobe for years to come.

SHIRT STYLE

Camber Tunic in camel (under), Mettre Shirt in white, Stripe Destination Jacket in Sand Stripe, Cayenne Jean in black.

Keeping with the jean styling, yes… the fabulous Cayenne’s come in a darker shade as well, this is a great outfit for spring weather. Light long sleeve layers are easy to wear, and don’t need to create bulk. The Camber Tunic is one of our most loved pieces, and the new camel colourway looks fabulous with all the creams and whites for summer. Over your Camber, add the Mettre Shirt, a divine cotton to wear, this was my first purchase from the summer collection, and I have thrashed it already. A looser fit, with a longer hem, it is great with all your skinny pants, and can be buttoned, tied, or belted however you like. Add the Stripe Destination Jacket for a bit of warmth if needed, the cropped back goes perfectly with the longer lines of the tops underneath. What a great alternative to a black blazer, the pinstripe is a great way to add a bit of texture to your outfit.

EASY STRIPES

Venetian Pant in black, Camber Tunic in white, Initiate Tunic in Stripe, The O Belt in lava.

This look is all about the stripes… for days when you want to steer away from the trusty black tops. The Initiate Tunic is one of those clever Taylor pieces that you can wear a few different ways… cowl necked with a split (pictured), or V Necked with a more fitted body, it even works as a cropped cardi. We can show you all the ways when you pop in store to have a little look. The stripes are layered with our handy Camber Tunic underneath, and the slim Venetian Pants on the bottom. The pants are super comfy, but add a bit of edge, and they will go with practically everything in your wardrobe. Add a splash of colour with the lava O Belt and you are ready to go. Work the belt either over the tunic, try pulling the tunic up over the belt to give a loose look, with an assymmetrical hem, or just belt it over the Camber and leave the tunic loose.

OBLIQUE TUNICS BACK IN STORE!

Oblique Tunic in graphite, Venetian Pant in sand, Leather Circle Jacket in distressed grey.

We have just received a new drop of our Oblique Tunics. A great loose layer, these drape beautifully and are made out of soft modal or viscose… casual enough for everyday running about, but dressy enough to wear out to summer bbq’s and dinners. We like the combo of the graphite colourway with the sand pants. It is nice to get away from those black skinny’s every now and then, and our lighter shades have proven very popular. Add a jacket over the tunic to pull in the volume, and give yourself great proportions. We still have a few of our limited leather Circle Jackets in store, very special Taylor pieces.

Come and see us in store and we will get you into some easy-to-wear casual pieces… with a Taylor twist of course!

After a gorgeous sunny Sunday, relaxing outside over a few wines and watching that big tournament that’s on… the Wellington team thought it was about time to put together their spring hotlist… roll on sunshine!

1… a maxi dress or skirt

Embrace the comfort of a long, loose skirt… our Liberty Maxi Dress has been a popular style, and many ladies have been surprised at how great it looks on! A great fit over the shoulders and bust, with a full but not too full skirt, the Liberty is easy elegance. Belt, layer or leave just as it is… and choose your colour – white, silver grey, persimmon red, mineral blue, or black of course. We also have our silk Float Skirt available in black, grey and camel, a simple but stunning style and perfect to wear with a loose shirt or cardi.

2… a cropped pant

Show off those ankles ladies! The new cropped pants are such a cool look for spring, and do the job of keeping your look fresh. Equally wearable with flat brogues or a pair of heels. Flattering cuts in store at the moment are our Cuffed Liman, a fitted style through the waist and hip with a slim leg, available in black, white and camel. The Garner Pant, a classic pleat front style with a bit of room through the thigh, available in black, graphite stripe and sand stripe. The Graduate Pant, our gorgeous silk style, has a fitted waist and soft pleat detailing at the front, tapering to a slim calf… these are stunners, available in persimmon red or graphite grey.

3… a stripe or bright

Sometimes it is hard for us to branch out from our neutral colour palettes, but this season we have been enjoying bringing you our bold brights and stripes. Everyone needs at least one piece, pick a colour to suit you, or go for the stripe if a bright is not your thing. Top picks are our silk Tucked Oblique Tunics, which we have just received more of, our striped Pod Dress, and our classic Parachute Shirts.

4… a piece of Nikki Gabriel knitwear

Beautifully hand-crafted, our Nikki Gabriel knitwear is very special, but super wearable. The cape-like Kaftan styles are so easy to throw on with your skinny pants. The dresses are unique and gorgeous on the body, great for everyday wear, or dressed up for special occasions. Nikki’s range is very limited, and is perfect for those of you who want a unique piece of New Zealand fashion.

5… playful accessories

Think bright belts, tassle earrings and chunky rings. We have some great new pieces at the moment, and often it’s that last little something that will make you feel perfect in your outfit. Our Network Neckpieces are a great way of adding a bit of fun to your wardrobe. For you leather lovers out there, we also have a new drop of Kohl & Cochineal… our pick, the Lattice Wallet, it is just divine… a great piece of New Zealand design.
