taylored at home - KELVIN
Posted:
Friend of taylor Kelvin has long been one of our favourite models to work with here in New Zealand not only for her beauty but her amazing spirit. After recently relocating to Sydney we caught up with Kelvin to hear more about her career in the fashion industry as well as an update on what she is doing these days. We love the way Kelvin embodies the taylor aesthetic and were so thrilled when she agreed to show us how she wears taylor from the comfort of her own home over the lockdown.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your relationship with us here at taylor?
I'm a model who lived in NZ for the past 8 years up until recently. I have worked with lots of different brands in the fashion industry in NZ and created not just professional relationships but also friendships with some people. Vicki Taylor is one of them. I met her the first year I came to NZ and we worked together on a look book and campaign shoot for her brand. From then on we have worked together on a regular basis – I even went to Paris with Vicki to launch her international brand.

You have been able to travel the world modelling - Can you tell us a little more about this experience and what you are up to these days?
Yes, I'm one of those lucky girls who is able to combine the beauty of traveling with work. Modelling is like any other job and has its joys and difficulties. I was lucky to meet and work with some of the top people in fashion industries all around the world, learn from them and experience how they work. When you are 19 years old and standing in front of Karl Lagerfeld in Chanel or Yohji Yamamoto and he points his finger at you to confirm you for his show in Paris – it feels pretty awesome!
I am currently working as a model and engage myself with other projects in fashion.
Do you have any amazing highlight moments from your modelling career?
I probably have too many! One of them was Jil Sander's exclusive show in Milan – I spent one week in their fashion house to prepare the looks for the show with Raf Simons when he was a designer for the brand. He is a very intelligent person and easy to work with. Another stand out for me was working with different brands in the New Zealand fashion industry – the way they treat you is a gift. I really enjoyed working in NZ and the locations are just amazing!

It was amazing to be able to shoot in a different way with you during the lock down period - how did you find the experience of leading your own shoot for taylor?
Challenging, exciting, new and rewarding. It was definitely a new process for me, being flexible and not having a full army of make-up artists, stylists and photographers. It had its challenges but the process was 100% rewarding and I loved it. I have worked with taylor before and knew roughly what the end result should look like. I live in a very cool area of Sydney with a good mix of modern and heritage architecture so it was exciting to match the looks with locations. I really enjoyed this process from start to finish.

You have recently moved to Sydney! How are you finding this relocation?
I've been to Sydney a few times before so it doesn't feel completely new for me. Everything was shut down during the isolation and I can't wait for things to go back to normal to discover what the city has got to offer. I also have some work opportunities back in New Zealand so I can't wait for the bubble to open between Australia and New Zealand.

What do you have planned for the year ahead?
When we are back to normal I want to get back to working full time, travelling and seeing more places I haven't been. Hopefully I can see my family and friends sometime this year.
Times have looked a little different over the last month or two. How have you been filling your days during lockdown?
It's hard planning anything right now, so I am hopeful we will get back to normal soon. For the time being I'm spending most of my time home like everyone else. I start my day with a coffee and exercise to keep my mind positive. I also have a list of books to read, online courses to do and have watched a few movies that I have been wanting to watch.

How would you describe your personal style?
My style is very minimalistic/classic with a hint of dark fashion when I feel inspired or if I am going to see one of my favourite Dj's at night. Castings require models to dress in a certain way, usually very clean and simple. I feel that this affected my wardrobe over the years which has become more paired back, but I think I could play a little more with my fashion choices now.

Having a look at the taylor AW20 range, is there anything you are lusting over?
I'm absolutely obsessed with taylor's suiting no matter what collection it is. Always elegant, minimalistic with unusual lines and cool cuts – I am a big fan of the brand so there are many styles I love. My top picks right now would be the Black Attained Wide Leg Pant and Black Duple Blazer.
