HOW TO CARE FOR WOOL

How to care for wool

As designers, we LOVE working with wool. When it comes down to it, few fibres are as wonderful to wear as merino. Its natural properties and characteristics come together to offer us a multitude of benefits beyond its elegant appearance; its natural, luxurious and warm handle with an unsurpassable drape provides just the right amount of body, and makes merino a delight to work with.

Soft, comfortable and breathable, merino is a highly efficient insulator, keeping you cool and fresh in hot temperatures, and toasty warm in colder weather. It also has the innate ability to both absorb excess moisture as well as repel large quantities of liquid, which means wool can minimise odour and resist soiling. Looking after your wool is easy with these simple steps.

WASH GENTLY

We use the finest quality merino to ensure our knitwear lasts and always looks great with no pilling and the softest fibres.

Always check the care label as it tells you the best way to care for your garment. Depending on the fabric composition and the garment, wool can be dry-cleaned or cold hand washed. We will always inform you the best way to proceed. If your piece can be hand washed, make sure it is washed inside out and always use a specific wool detergent as regular granular detergents contain harsh chemicals which can damage knitwear. Always use cold water and do not bleach.

DRY FLAT

Wet wool stretches easily so lay your hand washed knit on a clean towel and roll it up to draw the water out. Unfurl, reshape your knit and let it dry on a new towel away from the sun and heat to bring it back to its natural softness. Never use a dryer as the heat can cause your woollen piece to shrink and make sure it is out of direct sunlight to avoid colour fading.

STORE SMART

Knits should be gently folded and kept flat in drawers or on a shelf. Never store a knit on a hanger unless it is folded and placed over the bar of a hanger (not hung from the shoulders). When packing up winter woollens at the end of the season, make sure they are freshly washed before placing in an airtight container. Your woollen jackets and coats should be professionally cleaned twice a season to keep them looking fresh and never forget to take them to a drycleaner before storing to deter moths. Occasionally you can use a stiff brush to remove surface debris and spot clean the collar and cuffs with a damp cloth and mild soap in between wears.

HANDY HINTS

Always turn knits inside out when washing and avoid excessive use of fabric softeners which can encourage fibres to pill. If you accidentally spill something on your stunning piece of knitwear make sure you wipe it up immediately or else it will be absorbed. Dab the area with a solvent-based stain remover such as dry cleaning fluid or eucalyptus oil, applying small amounts at a time and working inwards to avoid spreading. Rinse the treated area with cold water then hand wash the knit, however if you do have a stubborn stain (such as grease, nail polish or ink) it is best to take the item to a professional cleaner. Always do a test patch on the garment before attempting to remove a stain.
